Lupus Awareness Month
So, what is Lupus?
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly referred to as lupus, is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its tissues and organs.
This can lead to inflammation and damage affecting various parts of the body, including the skin, joints, kidneys, brain, heart, and lungs.
The exact cause of lupus remains unknown, but research suggests a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors may play a role.
It's important to understand that lupus is not contagious. While anyone can develop lupus, it is more common in women, particularly those of childbearing age, and certain ethnic groups, including African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.
In the United States, it is estimated that around 1.5 million people have lupus, with thousands more being diagnosed each year. This significant number underscores the importance of ongoing research, early diagnosis, and comprehensive support for individuals living with the condition.
What are the Symptoms of Lupus?
The symptoms of lupus can vary widely from person to person and can range from mild to severe. Some common symptoms include:
- Extreme fatigue
- Joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
- Skin rashes, often a butterfly-shaped rash across the cheeks and nose
- Fever
- Chest pain
- Hair loss
- Sensitivity to sunlight
- Mouth ulcers
- Headaches
- Memory problems and confusion
The unpredictable nature of lupus means its impact on daily life can be significant.
Managing symptoms, attending medical appointments, and coping with fatigue and pain can present daily challenges.
Why Lupus is Close to our Hearts
As you may know, this cause is particularly important to us, as our founder, Cori Broadus, lives with lupus. You can read more about Cori's personal journey in a separate article here.
Throughout May, you’ll see a sprinkling of purple on the ChocFactory.com website. Purple is the internationally recognized color for lupus awareness, symbolizing hope and unity. We’ll be proudly displaying purple throughout the month and doing our bit to raise awareness.
A key organization leading the fight is the Lupus Foundation of America. This national non-profit is dedicated to improving the lives of all people affected by lupus through research, education, support, and advocacy.
During Lupus Awareness Month, the Lupus Foundation of America typically organizes various initiatives to raise funds, increase awareness, and connect the lupus community. You can find out more about their work and their specific plans for May on their website.
